CHINA TO CONSTRUCT POWER PROJECT IN PoK
- China under the multi-billion-dollar CPEC will set up a 1,124-megawatt power project in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir
- The CPEC passes through PoK, over which India has conveyed its protests to China.
- The details of the Kohala hydropower project was presented in the 127th meeting of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board
- The project will be built on the Jhelum River
- Aims at annually providing more than five billion units of clean and low-cost electricity for consumers in Pakistan.
- The Kohala Hydropower Project: It is a proposed run-of-the-river, high head project of 316 meters
- The Kohala Hydropower Project will be CTGC's largest investment in Pakistan.
- China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC) won the right to develop a hydroelectric dam in Pakistan on January 7, 2015
- The dam's feasibility study and detailed engineering designs were performed by SMEC
- In December 2018 the people of Muzaffarabad held protests against Kohala dam design due to its planned water diversion via tunnel which will bypass the Muzaffarabad city.
- The project is expected to earn carbon credit from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for clean energy development under the Kyoto protocol.
