President Donald Trump formally started the withdrawal of the U.S. from
the World Health Organization (WHO)
World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized
agency of the United Nations
responsible for international public health
Headquartered
in Geneva, Switzerland, with six semi-autonomous regional offices (Africa; Republic of Congo, Western Pacific; Philippines, Eastern Mediterranean; Egypt, South
East Asia; India, Europe; Denmark, Americas;
US) and 150 field offices worldwide
International Sanitary Conferences, originally held on 23 June 1851, were the first
predecessors of the WHO
When the League of
Nations was formed in
1920, they established the Health Organization of the League of Nations
After World War
II, the United Nations absorbed
all the other health organizations, to form the WHO
WHO was established by
constitution on 7 April 1948, which is commemorated as World
Health Day
As of 2020, the WHO has 194
member states: all of the member states of the United Nations except for Liechtenstein, plus the Cook Islands
and Niue
WHO member states appoint
delegations to the World Health Assembly, the WHO's supreme decision-making body
World Health Assembly is the legislative and supreme body of WHO. It
appoints the Director-General every five years and votes on matters of policy
and finance of WHO, including the proposed budget
Assembly elects 34 members,
technically qualified in the field of health, to the Executive Board for
three-year terms
WHO regularly publishes a World Health Report
including an expert assessment of a specific global
health topic. Other
publications of WHO include the Bulletin
of the World Health Organization,
the Eastern
Mediterranean Health Journal,
the Human Resources for Health, and the Pan
American Journal of Public Health
WHO's broad mandate includes
advocating for universal healthcare, monitoring public health risks,
coordinating responses to health emergencies, and promoting human health and
well being. It provides technical assistance to countries, sets international
health standards and guidelines, and collects data on global health issues
through the World Health Survey
WHO is financed by
contributions from member states and outside donors
2018, WHO's first global
conference on air pollution and health; organized in collaboration with UN
Environment, World Meteorological Organization and the secretariat of the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change
WHO aims to improve access to
health research and literature in developing countries such as through the HINARI network.
